This training material has been developed to support the PATTERN project's scope in strengthening researchers' understanding of copyright and empowering them to make informed decisions in the Open Access publishing landscape. Designed for both face-to-face delivery and webinars, the course "Empowering Researchers: Retaining Copyright and Maximizing Your Impact in Open Access Publishing" provides trainers with everything needed to facilitate engaging sessions — including session plans, activity materials, and participant evaluation forms. A dedicated checklist for pilot institutions ensures consistency and preparedness across training sites.

PATTERN
In this session, the learners should be able to:
-Understand Copyright: learn the basics of copyright, including what it protects and why it is crucial for authors.
-Apply Rights Retention Strategies: Equip yourself with strategies to retain control over their publications, even when dealing with traditional publishing agreements.
-Navigate Publishing Options: learn all about different publishing options—Gold, Hybrid, Diamond OA, and preprint servers—and their implications for authors' rights and open access.
-Utilize Legal and Practical Tools: get familiar with the know how to use legal addenda, Creative Commons licenses, and pre-submission letters effectively.
