Research evolves fast so should training. Since 2022, OpenAIRE’s Train-the-Trainer Bootcamps have equipped hundreds of librarians, data stewards, and support professionals across Europe with the latest knowledge and practical tools in Open Science, Open Access, and Research Data Management. Designed as hands-on, interactive learning journeys, these bootcamps blend expert insights, peer exchange, and pedagogy-focused activities to help participants design engaging, FAIR training and become catalysts for a more transparent and inclusive research culture.

2022 – The Beginning

Kicking off a movement for Open Science Trainers In June 2022, OpenAIRE launched its first-ever Train-the-Trainer Bootcamp, bringing together 35 professionals from 26 countries for a five-day deep dive into Open Science and scholarly communication. With expert-led sessions, peer exchanges, and practical training design exercises, the inaugural bootcamp laid the foundation for a vibrant, cross-European trainer network. This first step ignited a cycle of biannual learning that continues to grow.

2023 – Building Global Connections A growing community, deeper engagement

By 2023, the bootcamps matured into high-impact events featuring advanced topics like AI in research, Open Peer Review, and gamification in training. The fifth edition, held in September, welcomed 16 highly motivated participants from around the globe for a week of collaborative learning, group work, and storytelling. Participants shared "Horror and Hooray" stories, designed training plans, and explored tools like Argos and OpenPlato—cementing the bootcamp as a unique, participatory experience.

2024 – Expanding and Evolving Reaching new heights, refining our impact

In 2024, OpenAIRE’s sixth edition (December 2–6) continued the mission of shaping Open Science educators through focused learning paths and expert guidance. The bootcamp series now serves as a trusted entry point for librarians, data stewards, and support staff seeking to enhance their training skills and co-create a FAIR and open research future. With refined selection processes and more diverse voices, the community keeps expanding—one trainer at a time.
