OpenAIRE EXPLORE: Search & Discover

Find out more about this session

1. What is the main focus of this session?expand collapse

To introduce participants to the main functionalities of OpenAIRE EXPLORE and show how this user-friendly environment can be used to discover research outputs and the relationships mapped in the OpenAIRE Graph, thereby supporting openness, transparency, and FAIR data practices.

Who is this session designed for?expand collapse

The primary audience includes early-career data stewards, research support staff, and institutional stakeholders responsible for RDM implementation. The WG also collaborates with national funders, repository managers, and tool developers to align efforts and resources.

3. Why is this session dedicated to? How would I benefit regarding my stewardship role?expand collapse

You will gain an overview of how to access millions of research products and their metadata from diverse sources worldwide. Beyond assessing the openness of outputs and exploring their connections to projects, funders, and institutions — essential skills for monitoring compliance and supporting researchers — you will also learn how to actively contribute to the OpenAIRE Graph. This includes enriching it with missing links between research products, funding, and research communities, as well as creating your own portfolio by linking research products to your ORCID iD.

4. What kind of real-world cases will we explore?expand collapse

a) Use case: Download all the Open Access publications from my organization (OpenAIRE) that were funded by the European Commission. OpenAIRE EXPLORE can support data stewards in multiple ways: it enables compliance monitoring by checking whether ARC researchers are meeting the European Commission’s Open Access mandates; facilitates institutional reporting by producing statistics on OA compliance for internal use or funder audits; assists with repository curation by identifying missing links, such as publications not flagged as OA or not connected to EC funding; and strengthens researcher support by providing clear evidence to share with authors, for example pointing out when a paper is not showing as OA in OpenAIRE and guiding them to update their repository metadata. b) Use case: A Principal Investigator asks you: “Are all my Horizon Europe outputs open and linked properly?” With OpenAIRE EXPLORE, data stewards can easily perform a compliance check for funded projects by searching with a project ID to see which publications or datasets are visible, which are missing, and their current access status. For outputs not yet linked, the platform’s Link functionality allows users to claim connections between research products, funding, and research communities, helping to close gaps in metadata and ensure project outputs are accurately represented and compliant.

5. What will I learn about institutional roles and governance?expand collapse

You will understand how OpenAIRE EXPLORE can support institutional responsibilities, including monitoring Open Access policies, ensuring metadata quality, and aligning repository practices with funder and institutional requirements.

6. Will I be introduced to EXPLORE features and services updates?expand collapse

Yes. The session will highlight the core functionalities of OpenAIRE EXPLORE and demonstrate its application through concrete examples. Recent updates and enhancements are also available on the Roadmap of the service.

7. What outputs or skills can I expect to walk away with?expand collapse

By the end of the session, you will be able to: a)Navigate OpenAIRE EXPLORE with confidence. b)Understand how to perform searches and refine results. c)Discover research products, projects, data sources, and related organizations. d)Identify relationships across the OpenAIRE Graph and interpret their relevance for stewardship tasks.

8. Will there be any hands-on or group work?expand collapse

No. This is a presentation-only session. However, all examples shown during the session can be tried later by participants on their own, if they wish.

9. Is there any follow-up support or mentoring after this session?expand collapse

You can contact our team for support at any time via the OpenAIRE Support Help Desk system. Additionally, the OpenAIRE EXPLORE e-book and factsheet are available for further information. Helpful material will also be shared upon selection through OpenPlato.

10. How can I attend this session?expand collapse

This is a publicly open session. You can attend only by registering once.
