Day 2
Session 3

Hands on Exercise on OpenAIRE AMNESIA: Ethical Decision Making in Data Stewardship

imaeg-1

Find out more about this session

1. What is the main focus of this session?expand collapse

This session focuses on real-world ethical decision-making in data stewardship, using the AMNESIA tool to explore how data anonymization helps protect privacy while enabling openness. Participants will work through scenarios involving sensitive datasets, legal compliance, and data breaches.

2. What is the AMNESIA tool and how will it be used?expand collapse

AMNESIA is a flexible anonymization tool that transforms relational and transactional data to comply with k-anonymity and km-anonymity guarantees. It uses generalization and suppression techniques, along with helpful visualizations, making it suitable for non-experts. In this session, participants will apply AMNESIA to tackle real ethical problems.

3. Who is this session designed for? Is this a closed session?expand collapse

This session is ideal for early-career data stewards, research support staff, and RDM professionals interested in ethical stewardship, data privacy, and regulatory compliance within Open Science frameworks. Yes this a closed session and participants will be selected with profile compatibility and registration priority. This workshop will be provided to 20 participants in general.

4. What kind of real-world case scenarios will be covered?expand collapse

Participants will engage with three hands-on dilemmas: Anonymizing small population datasets Managing cross-border data sharing and legal compliance Responding to data breaches and notification dilemmas Each scenario encourages reflection on ethical trade-offs and practical solutions.

5. How does this session contribute to FAIR and Open Science practices?expand collapse

It builds capacity for ethical stewardship by showing how privacy-enhancing techniques and anonymization contribute to the “A” (Accessible) and “R” (Reusable) aspects of FAIR, while maintaining compliance with legal and ethical frameworks.

6. What will I learn about anonymization techniques?expand collapse

You will learn to use AMNESIA’s interactive visual interface to generalize or suppress sensitive values, apply privacy models like k-anonymity, and interpret anonymization outcomes in a stewardship context.

7. What outputs or skills will I gain from this session?expand collapse

Hands-on experience with anonymizing structured datasets Confidence in applying privacy-aware stewardship practices Tools and strategies to navigate sensitive data scenarios in your institution Ethical reasoning frameworks for daily decision-making

8. Is this session practical or discussion-based?expand collapse

Both. Participants will split into small groups for interactive anonymization exercises and discussion-based reflection on each scenario. Expect to collaborate, analyze, and present back your group's ethical approach.
