OpenAIRE Metadata Validator Hand on session: Achievement & Data Excellence

imaeg-1

Find out more about this session

1. What is the main focus of this session?expand collapse

This session introduces participants to the OpenAIRE Metadata Validator, a powerful tool designed to assess and improve metadata quality in alignment with OpenAIRE interoperability guidelines and the FAIR principles. This session focuses on using the OpenAIRE Metadata Validator to assess and improve metadata quality. Participants will engage in a hands-on exercise to identify metadata issues related to guideline non-compliance, verify conformance with OpenAIRE Guidelines, and enhance interoperability for research outputs.

2. What is the OpenAIRE Metadata Validator?expand collapse

The Validator is a web-based service linked to OpenAIRE PROVIDE, designed to check metadata for compliance with OpenAIRE’s technical and semantic standards. It verifies metadata structure, vocabulary use, ensuring your content meets the criteria for aggregation and reuse within the Open Science ecosystem. It will soon operate as a standalone service, further supporting content providers across different platforms.

3. Who should attend this session?expand collapse

This session is ideal for repository managers, early-career data stewards, and institutional RDM staff who work with metadata quality, system interoperability, and repository visibility. Whether you're just beginning or already managing repository infrastructure, you’ll gain practical skills that enhance the impact of your work.

4. What will I learn during the session?expand collapse

You will learn how to run metadata validation checks, interpret detailed validation reports, and fix common issues with the metadata compatibility. The session also shows how validation supports repository performance by increasing interoperability, aligning with FAIR principles, and ensuring technical readiness for the OpenAIRE aggregation and incorporation into the OpenAIRE Graph.

5. How does the Validator improve repository performance?expand collapse

By detecting metadata issues and helping you correct them, the Validator improves your repository’s compliance with interoperability standards, strengthens connections to the OpenAIRE Graph, and increases your content’s visibility and reuse across the Open Science landscape.

6. What practical benefits does it offer to my institution?expand collapse

Institutions benefit from improved metadata quality, enhanced interoperability, and alignment with Open Science mandates. This includes better contextualisation of research outputs through persistent identifiers and links to related entities, use of standard vocabularies and schemas, and increased eligibility for inclusion in the OpenAIRE Graph. Together, these improvements boost research visibility, support analytics, and strengthen institutional Open Science strategies.

7. What tools and resources will be used?expand collapse

Participants will be guided to access the Validator, run tests, and review real reports. Sample records may be provided if participants don’t have their own datasets. The session will focus on practical steps you can replicate in your institutional workflows.

8. How can I participate in this session?expand collapse

The Validator session is open to all Bootcamp participants and includes guided walkthroughs and live Q&A. Session materials and follow-up guidance will be provided after registration.
