Day 1_Planning for Stewardship: FAIR Principles and Essentials in Practice

Day 1 dives straight into where stewardship truly begins : the planning phase of the research lifecycle. From the first idea to the first dataset, participants will discover how thoughtful planning turns FAIR principles into daily practice. Through interactive workshops and persona-based exercises, we’ll step into the shoes of data stewards, researchers, and RPO managers to map real-world workflows and decision points. Together, we’ll explore what it takes to plan for trusted repositories, ensure compliance and openness using OpenAIRE PROVIDE and MONITOR, and design smart Data Management Plans with ARGOS. By the end of the day, participants will see how early stewardship choices shape every stage of the research journey  building a foundation for quality, trust, and reuse.

Day 2_Ethics in Action: Building Trust During Data Collection and Stewardship

Day 2 moves into the data collection and processing phase, where ethical decision-making, trust, and stewardship come to life. Participants explore how data is gathered, shared, and protected, and how choices made at this stage define the integrity of the entire research process. The day begins with DANS experts leading a practical session on boosting FAIR RDM teaching using PATTERN’s open training materials, followed by a closed workshop on designing ethical workflows and policies for trusted repositories. Midday, a case-based debate from OpenAIRE unpacks how licensing and consent shape reuse, inviting participants to wrestle with real ethical trade-offs. The afternoon brings ethics to life through a scenario-based group exercise, guided by experienced repository managers, where participants respond to dilemmas such as anonymization challenges, data breaches, and balancing openness with responsibility. The day concludes with a reflective stewardship ecosystem mapping, connecting each decision point back to the core principle of trust. By the end of Day 2, participants will have gained the practical mindset and ethical confidence to act as trustworthy stewards in the data collection and processing phase of research.

Day 3_From Metadata to FAIR-by- Design: Cleaning, Enriching & Preparing Data for Sharing

Day 3 blends a full spectrum of hands-on activities with expert-led instruction focused on metadata curation, enrichment, and practical FAIR implementation. The day begins with a train-the-trainer session from DANS, guiding participants in reusing PATTERN's FAIR RDM teaching materials, including project-based use cases and OpenPlato eLearning modules. Midday, participants split into two rotating workshops led by UMinho and ICM UW partnerns, where they will curate flawed metadata records using a Dataverse sandbox, apply checklists, add persistent identifiers, and improve alignment between metadata and documentation. A data cleaning session follows, where participants use tools like OpenRefine to standardize and reconcile datasets for interoperability. The afternoon concludes with a deeper dive into pre-deposit FAIR workflows, covering persistent identifiers, licensing, metadata registries, and repository selection, with a guided hands-on publishing exercise using Zenodo or Dataverse. Participants walk away with both conceptual understanding and practical experience in stewarding data from messy to meaningful.

Day 4_Community Engagement, Mentorship & Wrap up

Day 4 brings participants together for an interactive and reflective finale, designed to consolidate skills and foster community-building. The day opens with an energizing gamified hands-on activity, “Where LEGO Meets FAIR,” where participants explore data classification using playful analogies tailored to early-career data stewards provided by Area Science Park partners. This is followed by Speed Data Coffee Tables, a set of informal, rotating roundtables on key RDM challenges. In the afternoon, participants enter breakout rooms grouped by their daily assignment topics for a structured “speed dating” session: short, one-on-one mentoring exchanges with trainers, followed by peer-review discussions. These focused rooms allow for personalized feedback, exchange of ideas, and reflection on individual learning paths. The day wraps up with closing remarks and a certificate ceremony, celebrating the completion of a hands-on, community-powered learning journey.
